In order to apply, create an account through our application portal and you will be automatically given access to application questions.
Who can apply?
Anyone with an idea! It can be a single person or a team submission. The program is open to all FIU and non-FIU undergraduate, graduate, recent grads as well as faculty, alumni and any member of our South Florida community.
Is there an age requirement?
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for the StartUP FIU program. If you are chosen as a participant and are under the age of 18, you will be required to have your legal guardian sign a release.
What is the application process?
Applications will initially be reviewed by Bob Hacker, Wifredo Fernandez, and other members of the StartUP FIU leadership team. Applicants who make it to the second round will be called for an in-person interview with the team. Final decisions will be communicated to selected teams by December 1st.
Can I apply if I already have a business, with or without revenue?
Yes. We welcome individuals or teams in all stages of a company life cycle. The objective of our accelerator program is to help you develop your idea and grow your business. At StartUP FIU, we don’t care if you are in the idea phase, have a prototype, or have launched but are still in the pre-revenue generating phase. We look for passionate folks who are resilient and looking to scale their ideas.
How much time is expected of me if my team is accepted?
We recommend planning on investing approximately 10-12 hours a week to take full advantage and be successful in StartUP FIU’s accelerator program.
What if my application gets denied, can I apply again?
Yes. You are encouraged to ask for feedback and re-apply.
How much does the program cost?
Nothing. Zip. Nada. StartUP FIU has been designed to be a free accelerator open for all FIU and non-FIU students, faculty and staff, alumni or recent grads and any resident from our South Florida community…. yes, even the abuelitas!
The best part – we do not take any equity from your company either.
How will the program work?
The 14-week program will consist of workshops, fundamental skills sessions, and academic learning experiences. Each week a new topic will be explored, beginning with hypothesis validation and ending with a full investor pitch. During a typical week at StartUP FIU’s accelerator program, teams are expected to invest approximately 10-12 hours of learning and ‘getting out of the building’ to complete week’s deliverables.
Participants will be given space at the StartUP FIU Hub, located at FIU’s MMC, to work on their projects. Hub hours will be determined prior to the start of the program. Every team will have an assigned mentor with proven entrepreneurial expertise and domain experts will be available to supplement clear objectives cohort teams may have.
What happens at the end of the program?
During the final week of the program, each cohort will graduate. Those who complete and excel in the program will be given the opportunity to pitch their startups to potential investors, at the discretion of the Director of StartUP FIU.
Do I have to be in Miami in order to participate in the program?
The CEO/ Team Leader must be legally residing in Miami during the full duration of the 14-week program.
What does FIU get to keep?
Nothing. The company you create is entirely yours! Unlike other similar programs, StartUP FIU does not take any equity from your business.
What is expected of me after the completion of the program?
Becoming a StartUP FIU alumnus makes you a part of our ever-expanding network of entrepreneurs. As a StartUP FIU alumnus, your commitment is to continue keeping in touch with us regarding your company’s growth. We want to keep in touch with you and follow your successes.
